salmon recovery in the northwest

Orca Salmon Alliance Statement re: Congressman Mike Simpson’s proposal to invest in Northwest salmon recovery, infrastructure and communities

The Orca Salmon Alliance welcomes Congressman Mike Simpson’s (R-ID) comprehensive proposal to restore salmon across the Northwest and invest in our region’s energy and transportation infrastructure. This ambitious proposal reflects a serious commitment and tremendous effort on the part of the congressman and his staff.

While we will need additional time to thoroughly review the details, OSA supports the restoration of a free-flowing lower Snake River via a collaborative approach that honors tribal treaties and cultures and ensures all impacted groups have their concerns fully heard and appropriately addressed.

There are only 74 Southern Resident orcas left, and the Columbia-Snake River Basin provides prey for the endangered orcas during a time of year that is critical to the whales’ reproductive success. Congressman Simpson's proposal also increases funding significantly to accelerate much needed (and long under-funded) habitat restoration projects for salmon throughout the orcas’ range: in the Columbia Basin, along the Coast, and throughout the Salish Sea. We encourage members of the Northwest congressional delegation and our Northwest governors to see Rep. Simpson’s proposal as an opportunity to help solve the urgent salmon and orca extinction crisis and to invest in communities, a cleaner energy future, and the economy.

Comprised of 17 member organizations, the Orca Salmon Alliance (OSA) works to highlight the connection between two endangered species that need help: Southern Resident Killer Whales (Orcinus orca) and Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). The Alliance works together to support member organizations and to develop joint initiatives. Our immediate objective is to prevent the extinction of the Southern Resident killer whales by recovering the wild Chinook populations upon which the whales depend for their survival.
